NEW TRAFFIC PATTERN ALERT! Civic Center Boulevard
Beginning in the early part of April 2009, a new permanent traffic pattern will be introduced in the area of Penn's medical complex and CHOP. The new traffic pattern, better known as the One-Way Loop Project, will convert streets that currently have two-way traffic flow into one-way streets, while creating two new connector streets that will eventually provide two-way traffic flow. It is anticipated that the design of the new traffic pattern will ease the flow of traffic and increase the level of safety in this area.
More specifically, Civic Center Boulevard will become one-way southbound from Convention Avenue to Health Sciences Drive (formerly referred to as Riverview Drive and the South Service Drive), Health Sciences Drive will become one-way northbound from Civic Center Boulevard to Convention Avenue and Convention Avenue will become one-way westbound from Health Sciences Drive to Civic Center Boulevard. In addition, two newly created connector streets, the East Service Drive and West Service Drive, will provide two way traffic flow between Civic Center Boulevard and Health Sciences Drive (Note: For approximately one year, the East Service Drive will have one-way travel toward CHOP). Convention Avenue will continue to have two-way traffic flow between Health Sciences Drive and South Street (dependent on the South Street Bridge Project into
2010). Civic Center Boulevard traffic will remain two-way between University Avenue and Health Sciences Drive. Please see the attached One-Way Loop Map for a visual overview of the new traffic pattern.
To assist in a safe transition, Philadelphia Police officers will be assigned to key intersections for the first two weeks.
