University City Arts League - "Earth Camp" Summer Programs

Building boats, making kites and touring a solar energy factory are just a few of the fun things in store for children at the University City Arts league "Earth Camp" this summer.

Using the themes of Earth, Wind, Fire and Water, the four two-week sessions for campers 6 to 12 years of age begin July 6 and ends Aug. 28. The students will have fun learning about the planet's eco-system through science and the arts. All weeks include swimming and outdoor play. Snacks will be provided.

The camp days are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with optional before and after care.

Registration before May 15 will be $420 per 2-week session. Registration between May 15-June 15 will be $465 per 2-week session. Discounts for multiple sign-ups will be available.

Session 1: Earth (starts July 6)
Topics: Ecosystems and sustainability
Projects: Building ecosystems
Trips: Bio-pond, Bartram Gardens, The Philadelphia Zoo

Session 2: Wind (starts July 20)
Topics: Windmills and aviation
Projects: Kite making and flying, mobiles, and recycled wind chimes
Trips: The Franklin Institute, Bird Sanctuary @ Water Dept. Reservoir

Session 3: Fire (starts August 3)
Topics: Fire safety and the sun and its power
Projects: Building volcanoes
Trips: Fire Station tour, Solar Energy Factory

Session 4: Water (starts August 17)
Topics: Bodies of water and marine life
Projects: Building boats and making instruments that use water
Trips: Wissahickon Creek, Fairmount Water Works
