November 15 @ 11:00 am 2:00 pm

Participants will gather in conversation to share healing traditions and plant knowledge. You are not required, but are welcome to bring something you’d like to share with the group as well as an offering for the ancestors of the forest. This can be tea, juice, fruit, a song, or something else you’d like to share.

All classes and gatherings in the Indigenous Phytotherapy series are donation-based, with a sliding scale suggestion of $10-$40 per session or $2 for Southwest residents and ACCESS cardholders. You can donate via Venmo to the facilitator or in cash at the event. No one will be turned away for their inability to pay.

GINKGO WATCH 2025
Ginkgos are known to put on a show each fall with their bright yellow foliage, but their most special trait is dropping all of their leaves at once after one of the first frosts of the season.

The Woodlands staff is keeping a close eye on the trees and the weather in order to be as prepared as possible for Ginkgo Watch. With this map, you can visit the Ginkgos. You can also learn more about the history of the Ginkgo at The Woodlands (did you know the Ginkgo tree was first introduced to the US here at The Woodlands by our own William Hamilton?) with our blog post, “Roots of the Ginkgo.”

Come for a walk this Fall to see the glowing ginkgo leaves, tag your photos with @woodlandsphila and #GinkgoWatch, and make sure to follow our social media for updates on when the golden carpets arrive.

The Arthur Ross Gallery at the University of Pennsylvania will present the first American exhibition of acclaimed Basque photographer Fernando Postigo’s work from November 7 through late December 2025. This groundbreaking show offers unprecedented access to documentation of one of Spain’s most turbulent historical periods.

Exhibition Features
The exhibition will be accompanied by a short film about Postigo made by exhibition curator and award-winning documentary filmmaker Peter Decherney. Postigo will attend the opening, providing a unique opportunity for programming that addresses Basque history, the role of photojournalism, and the press’s role during revolutionary times.

Postigo’s granddaughter, Libby Paquette, served as assistant curator to the exhibition, and she has just begun her first year as a Penn undergraduate.

This rare presentation offers American audiences their first chance to experience one of Europe’s most important photojournalistic chronicles of political transformation and social upheaval.

The Postigo Express is curated by Dr. Peter Decherney, Edmund J. and Louise W. Kahn Endowed Term Professor in the Humanities, Professor of Cinema & Media Studies, and Director, Penn Global Documentary Institute, with Libby Paquette, Assistant Curator. Funding is provided by the Neumann Family Fund and the Arthur Ross Gallery.

Fiction is the lie through which we tell the truth, said Albert Camus. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Geraldine Brooks spent half her life as a journalist, running after the truth in difficult places where despots and warlords were desperate to obfuscate. Later she turned to fiction, but her novels always hew as closely as possible to historical truth. In the Wolf Humanities Center’s 2025 Dr. S.T. Lee Distinguished Lecture in the Humanities, Brooks will discuss her process as a novelist and how it is informed by the toolkit she acquired as a foreign corespondent covering conflicts in the Mideast, Africa, and the Balkans

A book signing will follow the lecture and Q&A.

Australian-born Geraldine Brooks is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist renowned for her deeply immersive, character-driven historical novels. Her fiction debut, Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague, became an international bestseller, translated into more than 25 languages. In 2006, Brooks won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her second novel, March. Her other bestsellers include People of the Book, Caleb’s Crossing, The Secret Chord, and Horse. In addition to fiction, Brooks has authored acclaimed nonfiction books, including Nine Parts of Desire: The Hidden World of Islamic Women, Foreign Correspondence: A Penpal’s Journey from Down Under to All Over, and The Idea of Home. Her latest book, Memorial Days, was published in 2025.

Join the ICA for an illuminating conversation on the making of Mavis Pusey: Mobile Images, featuring the exhibition’s organizers, Hallie Ringle, ICA’s Daniel and Brett Sundheim Chief Curator, and Kiki Teshome, Curatorial Assistant at the Studio Museum in Harlem.

Ringle will share insights into the decade-long research and curatorial process that brought this landmark exhibition to life—the first major museum survey dedicated to Jamaican-born artist Mavis Pusey (1928–2019). Showcasing over 60 artworks from her prolific 50-year career, the exhibition highlights Pusey’s distinctive approach to abstraction and her engagement with themes that continue to resonate deeply today.

Teshome will also discuss her work with Pusey’s personal archive—letters, poems, and design materials—that offer a rare glimpse into new dimensions of the artist’s life and practice.

Archaeological science forms the core of any research into ancient societies. This colloquium commemorates the institution of the CAAM curriculum and research facilities—focusing on ceramic analysis, archaeobotany, archaeometallurgy, zooarchaeology, and digital archaeology—and its achievements over the last ten years. Looking both within and outside the Museum, we’ll examine how laboratory-based analysis opens exciting new vistas onto the everyday lives of people in the past.

Dr. Tom Tartaron, Kolb Senior Fellow and Executive Director of the Center for the Analysis of Archaeological Materials, will introduce the colloquium. This year’s keynote lecturer is Dr. Alicia Ventresca-Miller, Director of the Ancient Protein and Isotope Laboratory and Curator of Archaeological Sciences at the Museum of Anthropological Archaeology at the University of Michigan. The program features talks by Kolb Fellows specializing in the fields associated with CAAM and in some cases trained by CAAM as well: Dr. Reed Goodman, Dr. Christopher P. Thornton, Dr. Mark Van Horn, and current Anthropology graduate student Chelsea M. Cohen.

Women dancing while wearing cultural dresses for Dia De los Muertos

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a lively holiday blending of Indigenous Mexican beliefs and traditions with the Catholic celebrations of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. With roots in rituals dating back 3,000 years to pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, Día de los Muertos is observed across Latin America and in Latine communities worldwide.

Explore the unique history, traditions, and expressions of this celebration of life and death. Learn about the ofrendas (offerings) at the center of the festivities. These ornate and colorful altars honor the dead (and encourage them to join the party!) with bright yellow marigolds, food, drinks, and photos. Discover the origins of the iconic smiling calacas y calaveras (skeletons and skulls) that are seen on candy, masks, and dolls across parades, vigils, and gatherings.

Preservation Alliance Executive Director Paul Steinke will lead a walking tour of his former neighborhood!

The brainchild of developer Clarence Siegel, Garden Court took shape in the 1920s, occupying in a tiny sliver of undeveloped land in the midst of West Philadelphia’s older streetcar suburbs. A planned community of detached, semi-detached and row homes rose up before the Great Depression, along with several distinctive multi-family apartment buildings. The neighborhood’s tree-lined streets, front gardens and accommodations for the increasingly popular private automobile set it apart from the older neighborhoods surrounding Garden Court. The borders of the Garden Court neighborhood are from 46th to 52nd street between Locust Street and Cedar Avenue.  This area also sometimes overlaps the ”Cedar Park” neighborhood.

After installing a new retaining wall with seating, we hope you’ll join us to install plants in the garden bed, so that next spring the space is alive with color and texture. We’ll provide the plants, tools and instructions, just come ready to get your hands dirty.

To participate, please e-mail awhittenberger@universitycity.org.

University City District’s Green City Works, in partnership with the Walnut Hill Community Association and Do Moore Good, is leading improvements at the playground, made possible by a $75,000 Target Foundation investment. Guided by input from more than 70 neighbors, early work includes a new play surface and upgraded safety features, with future plans for shade, games, and new equipment. Together, we’re helping transform this beloved community space, and we welcome all community members to participate!

Description: West Philadelphia’s Shakespeare in Clark Park, in collaboration with Upstream Performance Collaborative (UPC) and Cannonball, presents new heaven new earth, a bold, revisionist Afrocentric adaptation of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra by multidisciplinary artist Rayne. Directed by SCP Producing Artistic Director Shamus and featuring live music by Karen Smith, this allegorical work blends ancient history with poetic futurism, as Cleopatra faces off against a soothsaying Crocodile on the edge of empire and asks “when peace demands war, what will you become, and for whom?” Following an oversold, one-night premiere at Philly Theatre Week, new heaven new earth continues its development with two staged readings at The Proscenium at The Drake, running September 1st at 6 PM & September 16th at 8 PM.
The reading stars a host of Barrymore Award recognized talent and Shakespeare in Clark Park alumni including Kishia Nixon as Cleopatra, Ross Beschler as Marc Antony, STARFIRE as Charmian & Crocodile, Adam Howard as Octavius et al, Dante Brattelli as Enobarbus et al, and Katherine Perry as Octavia et al. Live percussion is performed by Karen Smith, a 2023 Pew Fellowship recipient known for her percussion-based collaborations and leadership of The Karen Smith Experience and Sistahs Laying Down Hands.

new heaven new earth was commissioned by Shakespeare in Clark Park in 2024 as part of a season-long initiative to develop original works in direct conversation with Shakespeare’s text and uplift Queer, Trans and Non-Binary voices. Rayne’s plays have been produced or developed with Primary Stages, Theatre Exile, Azuka Theatre, PlayPenn, and more, supported by the Leeway Foundation, Independence Foundation, and the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage. Shamus’s directing credits span Shakespeare in Clark Park, Boston Playwrights’ Theatre, the Playwrights’ Center, Pridefest at the Tank, and the Samuel French Off-Off-Broadway Festival.

The West Philly-based Black theatre company, Theatre in the X, is returning to Malcolm X Park with its summer production of Fraternity, a thought-provoking drama by acclaimed playwright Jeff Stetson.

Admission is free and available to the public at Malcolm X Park (5100 Pine St). Audience members should BYOC (bring your own chair) and will experience a block-party like atmosphere before the show. Shows are August 21 and 22 at 7 p.m. and August 23 and 24 at 5 p.m..

With performances running August 21 – 24, Fraternity brings together a dynamic cast featuring titans of Philadelphia stage and screen, including Brian Anthony Wilson, and rising young talent. The show examines urgent questions about power, legacy, and what it means to be a Black man in America.

“At a time when divisions seem sharper than ever, Fraternity challenges us to confront the tensions within our own communities — and to imagine what real unity might require,” said director and Theatre in the X leader Eric Carter. “Theatre in the X is proud to bring this urgent, thought-provoking work to life in the heart of West Philly, where Black stories deserve to be seen, heard, and wrestled with in public space.”

Join us for a FREE concert with Catbite, Philly’s own neo two-step ska band to The Lawn at uCity Square (37th and Cuthbert) on Thursday, August 21st!

Catbite is a ska band from Philadelphia formed in May of 2018. Influenced by the jolting energy of the Specials, the Selector’s edged lyrics, and Elvis Costello‘s love of melody, the group cranks out short, catchy tunes that usually have a deeper meaning… and sometimes don’t. Their highly anticipated Sophomore album, “Nice One,” also on Bad Time Records, was released on August 6, 2021 and was accompanied with a sold-out hometown show. Nice One includes hits like “Call Your Bluff,” “Excuse Me Miss,” and the soulful rocksteady tune, “Bad Influence.” You can catch them on tour across North America.

poetik selektions will kick things off with a DJ set at 5 PM, and Catbite will take the stage at 6:30! Our thanks to uCity Square for being our host and partner for Catbite!

The uCity Square Beer Garden will be open during the concert for pay-as-you-go drinks from Two Locals Brewing Company. Be sure to check them out!

Don’t miss our other dates for Summer Series! We’ll be welcoming BlocoFunk on Thursday, June 12th and Lady Alma and Vertical Current back to The Lawn on Thursday, July 10th.

About the Lawn: The Lawn at uCity Square is a playful pop-up space where the neighborhood can find shade, feel the grass beneath their feet, and enjoy events like live music, movies, fitness classes, crafts, and more. The uCity Square Beer Garden is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4 PM to 7 PM all season long. See their full calendar of events here.

About Two Locals: Richard and Mengistu Koiler made history when they opened Two Locals Brewing Company, the first Black-owned brewery in Philadelphia, in January of 2024 at 3675 Market Street within uCity Square. Two Locals serves a growing selection of house-brewed beers and food provided by Liberty Kitchen. See the video we produced about their journey from brewing at home to opening up their flagship store in University City.

Indications: Teresa Cervantes
August 15 – November 29, 2025

Please join Saint Joseph’s University for the opening reception of Indications: Teresa Cervantes at The Marvin Samson Museum for the History of Pharmacy. The event will take place on Friday, September 5th from 5 – 7:30 p.m. at Griffith Hall (first floor, 601 South 43rd St.) on Saint Joseph University’s West Philadelphia campus.

Free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

About the Exhibition: The Marvin Samson Museum for the History of Pharmacy presents work by Artist-in-Residence Teresa Cervantes. Drawing on traditions of apothecary craft, pharmaceutical marketing, and visual art, Cervantes’ compounded artistic approaches divulge the hope, fear, and purpose contained within the domestic medicine cabinet. As sites of ritual self-construction, medicine cabinets are porous spaces bridging the personal and political, the corporal and corporate. Indications invites viewers to consider the active ingredients of play, poetry and touch as forms of resistance to today’s increasingly corporate health and wellness industries.

Public Hours:
Thursday 2-6 p.m., Friday 1-5 p.m., Saturday 12-4 p.m., and by appointment
Curator Led Tours:
First Saturdays in September, October, and November at 1 p.m.
See website for full schedule of programs: sju.edu/pharmacymuseum/exhibitions

Access information: Saint Joseph’s University is dedicated to hosting inclusive and accessible events. If entering Griffith Hall through the Main Entrance at 601 S 43rd St., there are three sets of doors, each with five stairs leading up from street level. The middle set of stairs has railings on both sides. There are two sets of manual, wooden doors visitors must go through before entering Griffith Hall’s foyer, which leads directly to the entrance of the museum gallery. Griffith Hall also has an ADA accessible entrance with a ramp, railing, automatic doors, and elevator, as well as accessible restrooms and parking. Please contact us ahead of time to arrange an escort through this entrance, which is locked to the public. Two air filters will be running in the gallery.

The exhibition runs March 14 through July 19, 2025, open Wednesday through Friday 11 AM – 4 PM. Kurt Vonnegut’s artwork, like his writing, invites us to reflect on the human condition with humor and depth. His visual art, characterized by its simple yet poignant line drawings, often critiques societal norms and encourages empathy. This exhibition serves as a conversation starter on how art can express empathy, bridge divides and help heal societal trauma.

For more information on the exhibition and programs please visit the Kurt Vonnegut Jr. As a Visual Artist webpage.

SEPTA crews are tackling critical track and power maintenance, station upgrades and intensive cleaning as part of the 2025 Trolley Tunnel Closure. This year, in addition to the work by SEPTA, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will also be performing rehabilitation on the tunnel under the Schuylkill River. Due to the number of events planned for the city of Philadelphia in 2026, there will be no major Trolley Closure next summer.

Impact on Riders

SEPTA Trolley Routes [T1] 10, [T2] 34, [T3] 13, [T4] 11 and [T5] 36 will not operate in the Center City tunnel from 10 pm on Friday, July 11 to 6 am on Monday, August 11.

Trolley service will begin and end at 40th and Market Streets. Customers can board SEPTA’s [L] Market-Frankford Line at 40th Street Station for travel to Center City. Bus routes 21 or 42 also provide connections to/from Center City. For travel from Center City to University City and Southwest Philadelphia, riders can board the [L] Market-Frankford Line at 13th Street and then connect with trolley routes at 40th Street.

This is the 13th consecutive year SEPTA has held the Trolley Tunnel Closure program, which is scheduled during the summer when ridership is traditionally lower to impact the fewest number of regular customers.

This program gives SEPTA crews the opportunity to tackle construction, maintenance and safety improvement work in a concentrated period of time to reduce the number of outages throughout the year. It also enables preparation for Trolley Modernization – SEPTA’s program to transform the nation’s largest trolley network into an accessible, fast and easy-to-use system.

View alerts, advisories and detours across the system. To get the latest service news, call Customer Service at 215-580-7800 or follow SEPTA @SEPTA.

Live music for the music lover. On May 24th there was a grand opening launch for the do-it-yourself, handmade, mini museum exhibit called the Philadelphia Museum of Neighborhoods (PMON). The event took place in the basement of the Rotunda and it was FREE.

We want to generate visits to the exhibit AND show that it is a great community gathering spot. The museum will be up throughout the summer but this event is one night only.  The performer is Mr. Joseph Becton of Becton tours  who is a noted Blues man and celebrated historian. With over 30 years of experience making music this is sure to be a treat you don’t want to miss.  All ages are welcome.

Orchestra 2001 presents chamber music by Justinian Tamusuza, a leading voice in contemporary African art music and Uganda’s foremost living composer.

Drumming is at the heart of almost all cultures in Africa. ENGOMA ENTEERA means “drumming without singing and dancing” in the Luganda language. In Tamusuza’s music for harps, string quartet, woodwind quintet, and mixed ensemble, drumming rhythms will be heard without the use of actual drums, played instead on harp, cello, bassoon, French horn, or electric guitar.

“Mbeera Ggwe Wantonda” for two prepared harps
“Abaana Bange” for soprano saxophone, marimba, and electric guitar
“Mu Kkubo Ery ‘Omusaalaba” for string quartet
“Abaafa Luli” for woodwind quintet

This Orchestra 2001 performance is presented with support from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.

University City District’s networking event series University City MIX heads outdoors on Wednesday, April 23rd, 2025 from 5:30 – 7:30 PM.

Join University City District at the uCity Square Beer Garden (37th and Cuthbert) for networking and pay-as-you-go drinks from Two Locals Brewing Company at the The Lawn at uCity Square.

The uCity Square Beer Garden is an outdoor venue, so this event will be fair-weather only. In the event of inclement weather, we’ll postpone until Thursday, April 24th. Registered guests will be notified via email in the event of postponement.

Inverse and Obverse is a quartet rooted in a phenomenological approach to creative music. like the great philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty, we are examining the skin of the world, the very nature by which objects and sensations emerge from an interconnected web of being. It is this tenderness to the moment, and each other, which allows us to play poly-idiomatically.

Tickets are $5-20, no one turned away for lack of funds. This concert is sponsored by Philly Music Factory.

With the release of her debut album, ‘Hard Won,’ in March 2017, singer-songwriter, harpist, and guitarist Lizzie No established herself as one of the most exciting new voices in indie folk music. Billboard Magazine called the album “simultaneously understated and fervent.” She followed up the album with the release of “Sundown,” a benefit track for Black Lives Matter. Building on the songwriting prowess displayed in her critically acclaimed debut album, Lizzie No is unsparing in the stories she tells on her second album, ‘Vanity,’ released August 2, 2019. The nine songs on ʻVanityʼ are epic tales of ego, featuring narrative shifts within vividly crafted characters. No embodies characters ranging from a handsome egoist in “Narcissus” (which Rolling Stone called a “crisp alt-rock gem”) to a broke songwriter waiting for her big break in “Pity Party,” to a bitter and isolated rocker on “Loyalty” who rants that the crowd has left him behind. Inventive arrangements written in collaboration with co-producer Nick Rapley elevate the record to shimmering heights, alternating between swaggering grooves and intimate clarity.

The art of Wayang Kulit, a traditional form of storytelling originating in Java, is brought to life with the use of expertly crafted shadow puppets. The animal hide puppets are intricately perforated, painted, and attached to rods of buffalo horn, which, when manipulated by an expert puppeteer (or dalang), create movement in articulated limbs. During a Walang performance, the dalang, accompanied by a gamelan ensemble, uses the shadows cast by the backlit puppets to weave narratives that explore contemporary cultural and political themes as well as epic tales like the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2008, Wayang Kulit showcases the artistry of Javanese culture and preserves its heritage for future generations.

At this Making Workshop, you’ll hear from Professor Deven Patel, view examples of Wayang kulit from the Penn Museum’s collection, make your own shadow puppet, and try your hand at the art of puppeteering.

Making Workshops are Museum-sponsored events that encourage Penn undergraduate and graduate students to become more familiar with the Museum’s collection by getting their hands involved. These events provide a fun and educational setting to promote social interaction and engage students with artifacts and ethnographic objects. Create something related to the objects or theme of the night.

Drinking together has been a tradition for thousands of years. Take an unconventional (and boozy) journey back in time to discover what people of the past thought about alcohol, from how they made it to its role in society.

View early drinking vessels that reveal secrets of ancient Greek drinking games and the beverage served at a feast hosted by King Midas. We’ll finish by tasting a beer with a flavor profile inspired by an ancient recipe discovered by a Penn biomolecular archaeologist.

A painting of a palace in Nineveh, Iraq

In conflict zones like Syria and Ukraine, erasure is a part of systematic genocide and cultural cleansing, but a new exhibition shifts the focus to cultural heritage restoration through community-led excavation— Preserving Assyria showcases archaeology’s role in safeguarding cultural heritage from targeted destruction.

With 16 objects on display from the Penn Museum’s collection, touchable 3D replicas of monumental relief carvings, and interactive multimedia components, this exhibition will be on view in the Merle-Smith Galleries on the Lower Level starting Saturday, February 8, 2025.

Preserving Assyria will illuminate select artifacts from the Penn Museum’s Near East collections, such as a stamp-inscribed brick from Tell Yarah, Iraq (near Mosul) written in the Sumerian language (911-612 BCE); a Sumerian clay tablet that contains ancient spells to ward off witchcraft (1900-1600 BCE); a glazed terracotta wall tile from Hasanlu, Iran (1000–800 BCE), cylinder seals made of quartz and marble; and a protective amulet made of carnelian. Public programs related to the new exhibition include a special Curator’s Lecture on February 8 at 2:00 pm in Rainey Auditorium, as well as an engaging four-week online class, The Deep Dig: The Rise and Fall of Assyria, led by Dr. Michael Danti beginning March 6.

Called a wunderkind by blues legend Taj Mahal, Grammy®-nominated guitarist and singer Jontavious Willis makes his Penn Live Arts debut. Performing music from West Georgia Blues, his new album and a testament to his love of songwriting, Willis’ toe-tapping tunes are a synthesis of his Georgia heritage and reverence for blues traditions. “Willis deserves to be celebrated as one of the brilliant new voices” as he is “the real deal, a player and singer whose got it all: deep roots feeling, instrumental prowess and a voice that carries the heart and soul of the blues.” (Living Blues Magazine)

Two women sit on red chairs on a stage with a bright red floor. The woman in the center faces the camera, while the woman in the back sits at a 45-degree angle. Overturned red chairs are scattered around them.

A mother discovers the worst of truths. A father innocent until proven guilty. Waves of doctors, social workers and other “helpers” who don’t really want to know, furthering the secret’s concealment. In the U.S. premiere of Dentro, Giuliana Musso, one of Italy’s most interesting voices in contemporary theatre, explores the traumatic effects of silence when abuse occurs at home. Dentro is not documentary theatre but an investigation of a current happening; it’s not a work about violence but one exploring the concealment of truth and lost innocence of children.

Content advisory:
Dentro explores topics that may be difficult for some audience members. Please use discretion and note that this play is not suitable for children.
