SUMMARY:Garden Court Walking Tour: Presented by The Philadelphia Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians
DESCRIPTION:Preservation Alliance Executive Director Paul Steinke will lead a walking tour of his former neighborhood! \n\n\n\nThe brainchild of developer Clarence Siegel\, Garden Court took shape in the 1920s\, occupying in a tiny sliver of undeveloped land in the midst of West Philadelphia’s older streetcar suburbs. A planned community of detached\, semi-detached and row homes rose up before the Great Depression\, along with several distinctive multi-family apartment buildings. The neighborhood’s tree-lined streets\, front gardens and accommodations for the increasingly popular private automobile set it apart from the older neighborhoods surrounding Garden Court. The borders of the Garden Court neighborhood are from 46th to 52nd street between Locust Street and Cedar Avenue.  This area also sometimes overlaps the ”Cedar Park” neighborhood. \n\n\n\nREGISTRATION REQUIRED\, SPACE IS LIMITED \n\n\n\n$20 for Phila Chapter SAH members & Preservation Alliance Members \n\n\n\nTo register please send your name and cell phone number to info@philachaptersah.org \n\n\n\nIf space is available\, the team will send you the payment link.

SUMMARY:Indications: Teresa Cervantes Opening Receptions
DESCRIPTION:Please join Saint Joseph’s University for the opening reception of Indications: Teresa Cervantes at The Marvin Samson Museum for the History of Pharmacy. If entering Griffith Hall through the Main Entrance at 601 S 43rd St.\, there are three sets of doors\, each with five stairs leading up from street level. The middle set of stairs has railings on both sides. There are two sets of manual\, wooden doors visitors must go through before entering Griffith Hall’s foyer\, which leads directly to the entrance of the museum gallery. Griffith Hall also has an ADA accessible entrance with a ramp\, railing\, automatic doors\, and elevator\, as well as accessible restrooms and parking. SUMMARY:new heaven new earth - a revisionist history with live music
DESCRIPTION:Sliding Scale Tickets start at $5 \n\n\n\nTicket LInk: https://fringearts.my.salesforce-sites.com/ticket/#/events/a0SUO000004vOpP2AU \n\n\n\nDescription: West Philadelphia’s Shakespeare in Clark Park\, in collaboration with Upstream Performance Collaborative (UPC) and Cannonball\, presents new heaven new earth\, a bold\, revisionist Afrocentric adaptation of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra by multidisciplinary artist Rayne. Directed by SCP Producing Artistic Director Shamus and featuring live music by Karen Smith\, this allegorical work blends ancient history with poetic futurism\, as Cleopatra faces off against a soothsaying Crocodile on the edge of empire and asks “when peace demands war\, what will you become\, and for whom?” Following an oversold\, one-night premiere at Philly Theatre Week\, new heaven new earth continues its development with two staged readings at The Proscenium at The Drake\, running September 1st at 6 PM & September 16th at 8 PM.The reading stars a host of Barrymore Award recognized talent and Shakespeare in Clark Park alumni including Kishia Nixon as Cleopatra\, Ross Beschler as Marc Antony\, STARFIRE as Charmian & Crocodile\, Adam Howard as Octavius et al\, Dante Brattelli as Enobarbus et al\, and Katherine Perry as Octavia et al. Live percussion is performed by Karen Smith\, a 2023 Pew Fellowship recipient known for her percussion-based collaborations and leadership of The Karen Smith Experience and Sistahs Laying Down Hands. \n\n\n\nnew heaven new earth was commissioned by Shakespeare in Clark Park in 2024 as part of a season-long initiative to develop original works in direct conversation with Shakespeare’s text and uplift Queer\, Trans and Non-Binary voices. Rayne’s plays have been produced or developed with Primary Stages\, Theatre Exile\, Azuka Theatre\, PlayPenn\, and more\, supported by the Leeway Foundation\, Independence Foundation\, and the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage. SUMMARY:Into the Blue Exhibit at Penn Museum - on view through spring 2026
DESCRIPTION:A new exhibition curated by undergraduate students from the University of Pennsylvania explores the deep human history associated with a popular hue that has stood the test of time—Into the Blue: The Pursuit of a Color opens Saturday\, March 29\, 2025 at the Penn Museum. \n\n\n\nUnlike today\, blue was not easy to produce nor acquire in the ancient past. The relentless pursuit of blue for use in textiles and art has led to the development of ingenious methods in producing this rare\, highly prized color that holds significant meaning for diverse cultures around the world throughout history. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nInto the Blue spans 4\,000 years—displaying 20 objects from across the Penn Museum’s collections\, including select artifacts from the Middle East\, China\, Africa\, ancient Egypt\, and Central America. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe exhibition examines three themes: Obtaining Blue\, Making Blue\, and Synthesizing Blue. \n\n\n\nObtaining Blue highlights the mining and transportation of lapis lazuli\, a semi-precious gemstone used in decorative and ceremonial objects in the Middle East—along with the trapping of kingfishers\, brightly colored birds whose feathers were used to decorate articles of adornment in China. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nInto the Blue will be on view through spring 2026 and is included with Penn Museum admission.
