DESCRIPTION:We are excited to invite community members to a volunteer day at the Walnut Hill Playground! These efforts will kick off phase 2 of the playground renovations.  \n\n\n\nAfter installing a new retaining wall with seating\, we hope you’ll join us to install plants in the garden bed\, so that next spring the space is alive with color and texture. We’ll provide the plants\, tools and instructions\, just come ready to get your hands dirty. \n\n\n\nTo participate\, please e-mail awhittenberger@universitycity.org. \n\n\n\nUniversity City District’s Green City Works\, in partnership with the Walnut Hill Community Association and Do Moore Good\, is leading improvements at the playground\, made possible by a $75\,000 Target Foundation investment. Guided by input from more than 70 neighbors\, early work includes a new play surface and upgraded safety features\, with future plans for shade\, games\, and new equipment. Together\, we’re helping transform this beloved community space\, and we welcome all community members to participate!

SUMMARY:Into the Blue Exhibit at Penn Museum - on view through spring 2026
DESCRIPTION:A new exhibition curated by undergraduate students from the University of Pennsylvania explores the deep human history associated with a popular hue that has stood the test of time—Into the Blue: The Pursuit of a Color opens Saturday\, March 29\, 2025 at the Penn Museum. \n\n\n\nUnlike today\, blue was not easy to produce nor acquire in the ancient past. The relentless pursuit of blue for use in textiles and art has led to the development of ingenious methods in producing this rare\, highly prized color that holds significant meaning for diverse cultures around the world throughout history. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nInto the Blue spans 4\,000 years—displaying 20 objects from across the Penn Museum’s collections\, including select artifacts from the Middle East\, China\, Africa\, ancient Egypt\, and Central America. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe exhibition examines three themes: Obtaining Blue\, Making Blue\, and Synthesizing Blue. \n\n\n\nObtaining Blue highlights the mining and transportation of lapis lazuli\, a semi-precious gemstone used in decorative and ceremonial objects in the Middle East—along with the trapping of kingfishers\, brightly colored birds whose feathers were used to decorate articles of adornment in China. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nInto the Blue will be on view through spring 2026 and is included with Penn Museum admission.

DESCRIPTION:Join Alyssa Reynoso-Morris\, author of Plátanos Are Love\, for an interactive workshop on how to write and publish picture books. Discussion topics include pathways to becoming an author\, creativity\, publishing\, and finding an agent. This program is meant for adults and teenagers. \n\n\n\nAlyssa Reynoso-Morris is a queer Afro-Latine/x Dominican and Puerto Rican award-winning storyteller\, author\, and motivational speaker. She is also a mother and community organizer. During the day\, she works with community members\, non-profit organizations\, and government officials to make the world a better place. Then she puts on her writer’s hat to craft heartfelt stories. The soothing vibrations of singing bowls and chimes encourage deep relaxation and a sense of peace\, leaving you refreshed and restored. The presentation will guide participants through breathing exercises\, provide information on the science of self-care and the chemical reaction within the body to improve health\, in addition to the sound bath experience. The event is set for Friday\, September 26th 4-5PM and has a rain date of Friday\, October 3rd 4-5PM.

SUMMARY:Kolb Senior Scholars Colloquium at the Penn Museum
DESCRIPTION:Archaeological science forms the core of any research into ancient societies. This colloquium commemorates the institution of the CAAM curriculum and research facilities—focusing on ceramic analysis\, archaeobotany\, archaeometallurgy\, zooarchaeology\, and digital archaeology—and its achievements over the last ten years. Looking both within and outside the Museum\, we’ll examine how laboratory-based analysis opens exciting new vistas onto the everyday lives of people in the past. \n\n\n\nDr. Tom Tartaron\, Kolb Senior Fellow and Executive Director of the Center for the Analysis of Archaeological Materials\, will introduce the colloquium. This year’s keynote lecturer is Dr. Alicia Ventresca-Miller\, Director of the Ancient Protein and Isotope Laboratory and Curator of Archaeological Sciences at the Museum of Anthropological Archaeology at the University of Michigan. The program features talks by Kolb Fellows specializing in the fields associated with CAAM and in some cases trained by CAAM as well: Dr. Reed Goodman\, Dr. Christopher P. Thornton\, Dr. Mark Van Horn\, and current Anthropology graduate student Chelsea M. Cohen.

DESCRIPTION:Preservation Alliance Executive Director Paul Steinke will lead a walking tour of his former neighborhood! \n\n\n\nThe brainchild of developer Clarence Siegel\, Garden Court took shape in the 1920s\, occupying in a tiny sliver of undeveloped land in the midst of West Philadelphia’s older streetcar suburbs. A planned community of detached\, semi-detached and row homes rose up before the Great Depression\, along with several distinctive multi-family apartment buildings. The neighborhood’s tree-lined streets\, front gardens and accommodations for the increasingly popular private automobile set it apart from the older neighborhoods surrounding Garden Court.
