DESCRIPTION:A new exhibition curated by undergraduate students from the University of Pennsylvania explores the deep human history associated with a popular hue that has stood the test of time—Into the Blue: The Pursuit of a Color opens Saturday\, March 29\, 2025 at the Penn Museum. \n\n\n\nUnlike today\, blue was not easy to produce nor acquire in the ancient past. The relentless pursuit of blue for use in textiles and art has led to the development of ingenious methods in producing this rare\, highly prized color that holds significant meaning for diverse cultures around the world throughout history. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nInto the Blue spans 4\,000 years—displaying 20 objects from across the Penn Museum’s collections\, including select artifacts from the Middle East\, China\, Africa\, ancient Egypt\, and Central America. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe exhibition examines three themes: Obtaining Blue\, Making Blue\, and Synthesizing Blue. \n\n\n\nObtaining Blue highlights the mining and transportation of lapis lazuli\, a semi-precious gemstone used in decorative and ceremonial objects in the Middle East—along with the trapping of kingfishers\, brightly colored birds whose feathers were used to decorate articles of adornment in China. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nInto the Blue will be on view through spring 2026 and is included with Penn Museum admission.

DESCRIPTION:Improvised Musical Theater Workshop Series (for ages 18-180!)Tuesdays Jan 13- Feb 17\, 20266-7:30 pm @ The Arts League\, 4226 Spruce Street\, West PhillyClass Show: Sun\, Feb 22 at 11 am \n\n\n\nLearn to love the spontaneous\, the unplanned\, and the surprising as we improvise entire musicals from scratch! \n\n\n\nThrough improv exercises and songful games\, we’ll create songs and scenes on the fly\, learn common song structures\, and practice the art of spontaneity within a supportive community. In addition to being extremely fun\, musical improv offers practice in teamwork\, flexibility within structure\, mutual support\, and creative problem-solving. \n\n\n\nHow are conflicts created and resolved in song? What makes a catchy chorus? How can you use a melody to reflect emotion? How do actors decide when to burst into song? After playing with these concepts\, we’ll create our very own musical\, which will be unforgettable and immediately forgotten. \n\n\n\nFacilitated by Julie Lipson and Miles Crabtree\, two music therapists/performers\, this class will focus on self-expression and authenticity– not perfect performances. SUMMARY:Rest & Restore: Winter Restorative Yoga Workshop
DESCRIPTION:OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\n\n\n\nJoin Monica Fauble\, Licensed Acupuncturist and Certified Yoga Teacher\, for a special seasonal alignment restorative yoga session. Restorative yoga is a style of yoga that encourages rest and relaxation. Using props to minimize tension in the body\, we will invite greater ease in the spirit and the nervous system.In this special seasonal alignment workshop\, we will explore the energy of winter according to Chinese Medicine. The energetic direction of winter in Chinese Medicine theory is “storage”. Just as the animals and plants store and conserve energy in wintertime\, we will explore how to preserve and protect our energy so that we can find more connection to our own inner wisdom during the darker shorter days. \n\n\n\nAlong with a short talk about how to best harmonize with the energy of winter\, participants will receive handouts with seasonal health tips and journaling prompts to help them make the most of autumn. The majority of our time together during this workshop will be spent practicing seasonally-inspired restorative yoga postures that will help you explore the energy of this season.

DESCRIPTION:The Woodlands Cemetery is taking the opportunity to give the grounds a much-needed winter spruce-up. Join us on Saturday\, January 24th for a volunteer clean-up session\, and read on for what you can do at The Woodlands to keep the grounds beautiful\, whenever you may be visiting. \n\n\n\nWhat they’ll be doing: Collecting fallen sticks and branches\, raking leaves\, picking up trash along Woodland Avenue\, and doing other outdoor site clean-up chores as needed. Volunteers should plan to bend and lift throughout the day. \n\n\n\nWhere you’ll meet: The day will start at the Stable at 10AM. \n\n\n\nWhat you’ll need: Not required\, but feel free to bring your favorite pair of hand pruners if you have them. BYO work gloves and water. \n\n\n\nWhat The Woodlands will provide: Larger tools\, guidance\, and a full to-do list. \n\n\n\nRather work on your own schedule? Here are jobs you can do on your own throughout the week: \n\n\n\nPick up trash and deposit it in our dumpster (located in the carriage yard\, next to the stable) \n\n\n\nPick up sticks from throughout the cemetery and pile them along the curb to be chipped. \n\n\n\nThis event will be canceled in the event of inclement weather. We’ll get in touch the day before with updates!
