SUMMARY:Baby Whale and the Plastic Ocean on Tour
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia Children’s Theater presents BABY WHALE AND THE PLASTIC OCEAN ON TOUR. \n\n\n\nBaby Whale and the Plastic Ocean educates and inspires children and their grown-ups to learn about the ocean and all of the wonderful creatures who live there. Through the powers of community and problem-solving\, participants work together to have a positive impact on the environment. Our underwater tale ignites the imagination through playful interaction and creative theatrical storytelling. \n\n\n\nBaby Whale journeys through the ocean to reunite with Mommy Whale\, who has become tangled in a ghost net in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. With help from his community of aquatic pals & new human friends\, Baby Whale helps make the ocean more safe (and more fun) for all. \n\n\n\nBaby Whale and the Plastic Ocean on Tour runs approximately 55 minutes\, including a post-show Q&A. \n\n\n\nBaby Whale may be best enjoyed by children ages 3-8\, but is made to be fun for everyone. SUMMARY:DEAD JAZZ! Metal\, Jazz\, & Eclectic Improvisation
DESCRIPTION:DEAD JAZZMatt Hollenberg\, Guitar and SoundscapesTom Spiker\, Bass and SoundscapesGrant Calvin Weston\, Drums\, Voice Soundscapes and Roland Drum Pads \n\n\n\n[https://parkwestrecords.bandcamp.com/album/dead-jazz] \n\n\n\nStep into the electrifying universe of Dead Jazz\, where metal\, jazz\, and eclectic improvisation collide in an audacious sonic journey. The Hollenberg\, Spiker\, Weston Trio delivers an instrumental tour de force that captures the raw energy\, masterful interplay\, and fearless exploration of three boundary-pushing musicians. \n\n\n\nAt the helm of rhythm and texture is G Calvin Weston\, a legendary drummer and trumpeter with a career as groundbreaking as his performances. At just 17\, Weston joined Ornette Coleman’s revolutionary Prime Time band\, contributing to three seminal albums that reshaped the landscape of jazz. Over the years\, he has performed and recorded with icons like James Blood Ulmer and John Lurie’s The Lounge Lizards. With more than two dozen albums as a leader or co-leader\, Weston’s relentless creativity thrives in projects like Free Form Funky Freqs\, alongside Vernon Reid and Jamaaladeen Tacuma\, and Wail\, with members of Stinking Lizaveta. His drumming on Dead Jazz is both propulsive and free\, driving the music forward while carving out vast rhythmic landscapes. \n\n\n\nMatt Hollenberg wields the guitar like a force of nature. Known as the blazing guitarist of Cleric and John Zorn’s Simulacrum\, his musical realm spans avant-garde classical\, free jazz\, dissonant math metal\, ambient\, and world music. Originally from Philadelphia and now Brooklyn-based\, Hollenberg composes intricate pieces that seamlessly fuse fiery solos with improvisational brilliance. Collaborations with luminaries like John Zorn and John Medeski have solidified his reputation as an innovator unafraid to push musical boundaries. On Dead Jazz\, Hollenberg’s guitar erupts into a kaleidoscope of sounds—angular riffs\, searing melodies\, and abstract textures that defy expectations. \n\n\n\nOn bass is Tom Spiker\, a producer\, mixer\, and instrumentalist whose deft touch provides the harmonic foundation for the trio’s dynamic explorations. Spiker’s dual role as bassist and recording engineer is pivotal in capturing the immediacy and intensity of the session. His rich\, resonant bass lines anchor the chaos with precision\, while his mixing—alongside Hollenberg—ensures every layer of sound shines. Spiker’s skill as a producer also brings a deliberate edge to Dead Jazz\, making it as clear as it is unrelenting. \n\n\n\nDead Jazz is a bold statement of artistic freedom and collaborative invention. Released under Park West Records\, the album invites listeners into a soundscape where improvisation is the driving force and the unexpected becomes the norm.

SUMMARY:Into the Blue Exhibit at Penn Museum - on view through spring 2026
DESCRIPTION:A new exhibition curated by undergraduate students from the University of Pennsylvania explores the deep human history associated with a popular hue that has stood the test of time—Into the Blue: The Pursuit of a Color opens Saturday\, March 29\, 2025 at the Penn Museum. \n\n\n\nUnlike today\, blue was not easy to produce nor acquire in the ancient past. The relentless pursuit of blue for use in textiles and art has led to the development of ingenious methods in producing this rare\, highly prized color that holds significant meaning for diverse cultures around the world throughout history. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nInto the Blue spans 4\,000 years—displaying 20 objects from across the Penn Museum’s collections\, including select artifacts from the Middle East\, China\, Africa\, ancient Egypt\, and Central America. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe exhibition examines three themes: Obtaining Blue\, Making Blue\, and Synthesizing Blue. \n\n\n\nObtaining Blue highlights the mining and transportation of lapis lazuli\, a semi-precious gemstone used in decorative and ceremonial objects in the Middle East—along with the trapping of kingfishers\, brightly colored birds whose feathers were used to decorate articles of adornment in China. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nInto the Blue will be on view through spring 2026 and is included with Penn Museum admission.

DESCRIPTION:Known for raw\, intensely physical and cinematic choreography\, Compagnie Virginie Brunelle performs in Philadelphia for the first time with the U.S. premiere of Fables.
