At midnight on July 1st, 2025, more than 9,000 municipal workers from AFSCME District Council 33 (DC33) elected to enact a work stoppage when their union contract expired without a new agreement in place. The DC33 members provide essential services including 911 dispatch for Fire and Police Departments, trash and recycling collection, and other key services.

The City of Philadelphia has provided guidelines for emergency services, trash and recycling collection, and other impacted services at this website. While the strike continues, residential trash and recycling will not be collected, and the City is asking residents to refrain from placing any trash or recycling out for curbside collection until further notice. The City is also encouraging residents to bring their trash and recycling to six Sanitation drop-off centers (open 6 AM to 10 PM) Sunday through Saturday, or to one of 60 temporary drop-off location sites (available 6 AM to 10 PM) Monday through Saturday. You can view an interactive map of drop-off centers at the link below.

University City District remains dedicated to providing our typical services, though some elements of our work, including our own abilities to transport waste to collection sites, may also be impacted by the work stoppage. During this period, UCD is unable to assist with trash collection or illegal dumping that may arise due to the citywide service interruptions.

If you are a resident or business owner who spots illegal dumping, overflowing municipal trash cans, or abandoned furniture or debris, we ask you to please contact 311 to report and escalate issues.
