Philadelphia’s iconic William H. Gray III 30th Street Station has officially been named one of the most beautiful train stations in the United States by National Geographic, but we would argue that it’s always deserved the title.

As one of the busiest transportation hubs in the Northeast, it is easy to move through the station with a laser-eyed focused on schedules and departures. But pause for a moment and the neoclassical symmetry and Art Deco sophistication come into view, revealing details that make it extraordinary.

Here is why this landmark is much more than just a place to catch a train, and updates on what is changing in the months ahead.

A Major Restoration Is Underway

William H. Gray III 30th Street Station is an architectural experience, and its legacy is now being carried forward through a large-scale restoration and renovation project. Beginning in January 2024, construction officially entered a new phase focused on modernizing the station while honoring its historic character. Watch the video below to see the latest!

What to Know During Construction

  • The South Concourse and Market Street Plaza are closed to the public
  • Station retail has been relocated to kiosks in the Main Concourse
  • Ground-level access remains available through the 30th Street and 29th Street entrances
  • Additional details on closures and pedestrian detours are available through official station updates

While parts of the station may feel different for now, access to trains and services continues throughout construction.

What This Project Will Deliver

With nearly 500,000 square feet of renovation and modernization, the William H. Gray III 30th Street Station Redevelopment Project is a major milestone for both the station and the surrounding neighborhood. It follows the recent façade cleaning and restoration led by Amtrak and marks the first phase of the broader Philadelphia 30th Street Station District Plan.

Key Benefits of the Project

  • Modernized station operations
  • A smoother, more welcoming traveler experience
  • Improved pedestrian circulation and clearer wayfinding
  • Expanded and modernized food, beverage, and retail offerings
  • New public spaces and landscape upgrades
  • Enhanced building and streetscape aesthetics
  • Increased amenities for community programs
  • Completion of rebranding efforts honoring William H. Gray III
  • An estimated 3,000 direct and indirect local jobs
  • Stronger economic development across the district
  • A clearer gateway into West Philly and University City

Together, these upgrades are designed to make the station a destination in its own right.

A Vision for the Future of 30th Street

This redevelopment is the first step in realizing the Philadelphia 30th Street Station District Plan, a long-term vision that connects transit, public space, retail, and development across the surrounding area. Part of the project also involves Amtrak and its partners from Plenary Infrastructure Philadelphia (PIP) taking over stewardship of The Porch at 30th Street Station, after the public space was managed by University City District from 2011 through October of 2025.
