Monday, June 18, 2012

(Philadelphia, PA) – Last fall, University City District (UCD) unveiled a new signature public space, The Porch at 30th Street Station. Since, UCD has made it one of the most animated public places in Philadelphia with a weekly farmers’ market, fitness classes, live concerts and circus arts, and special events in addition to abundant and comfortable seating, sun and shade, and trees and plantings.

This July, UCD is pleased to present two special pop-up events, Mini Golf from July 1-31 and Beer Garden from July 12-14

Mini Golf at The Porch | July 1-31 (10am-8pm)

Free 9-hole mini golf comes to The Porch at 30th Street Station every day in July! Give us a valid photo ID and we’ll give you a club, ball, scorecard and pencil. Fore!

Beer Garden at The Porch | July 12 (4-8pm), July 13 (noon-8pm), July 14 (noon-5pm)

Experience the first-ever outdoor Beer Garden at The Porch at 30th Street Station. Bridgewater’s Pub will offer German and craft beers, bratwurst, sauerkraut and Italian sausage sandwiches. Enjoy the fresh air and live music, all while taking in the sights and sounds of the second busiest train station in America.

In addition, visitors are encouraged to experience visual art works at The Porch:

Hakoniwa | A site-specific public art installation

Hakoniwa is the Japanese word for miniature garden as well as a form of psychotherapy, also known as “sandplay therapy,” whose subjects arrange various items within a small sandbox. For this installation, Pew Fellow Nami Yamamoto has responded to the concrete planters at The Porch. Yamamoto's "garden" extends the reach of the colorful forms within each planter, spilling over the edges of the concrete forms. Presented in a variety of playful arrangements, Yamamoto creates new visual narratives both from and for the everyday.

Anaesthasia Emeralda Lucian | Justin Duerr’s Heart & Soul piano

Artist Justin Duerr, best known as the protagonist in the documentary film Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles, was one of the eight artists selected to decorate a piano for UCD’s Heart and Soul pop-up piano project. Beginning in July, Duerr’s breathtaking Anaesthasia Emeralda Lucian piano will be on display and ready to play at The Porch.

As the name suggests, The Porch is a welcoming entryway to the city, as well as a place to linger and socialize, and a place to entertain and be entertained. Between two magnificent historic buildings, The Porch balances the indoor grandeur of 30th Street Station with the wonder and expanse of Philadelphia.
