TOP 5 REASONS UNIVERSITY CITY IS SPECTACULAR IN THE SUMMER

Thursday, June 27, 2013

(Philadelphia, PA) – Summer is officially here. And school may be out, but that doesn’t mean that University City (and University City District) goes on vacation. From pop-up mini-golf to Dining Days to family-friendly concerts, University City summers are filled with the sights, sounds and smells that make this neighborhood one of the most continually festive. Here are a few reasons to visit University City this summer:

  1. Where else can you play a free game of mini-golf? Mini Golf at The Porch will pop-up from July 1-31. This free 9-hole mini-golf joins the very popular food truck program where - each Wednesday and Friday from 11:30am-2:30pm - many of the Philadelphia-area’s most popular mobile food vendors populate The Porch, offering a wide range of gourmet lunch items.

  2. Scheduled for the last Saturdays in June to September, the 40th Street Summer Series transforms the 40th Street Field into a family-friendly center of global sounds and good vibrations. These free outdoor performances will feature internationally-renowned ensembles including the whimsical Philadelphia Ukulele Orchestra, the Millennial Territory Orchestra (performing the music of Sly and The Family Stone), Spaceship Aloha (featuring Man Man’s Chris Powell), and The Heavens Atheist Gospel Trombone Choir. All concerts are held on the beautiful green space just behind the Walnut Street Free Library at 40th and Walnut Streets beginning at 6pm. Complimentary (first come, first served) Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream and pretzels will also be given out during the performances.

  3. Enjoy free outdoor screenings of Batman, Spaceballs, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure and other 80s classics at one of Philadelphia’s most scenic new green spaces. UCD and The Awesome Fest, in collaboration with Drexel University, present a free 8-week summer film series at Drexel Park, where you’ll also enjoy perhaps the best view of Philadelphia’s skyline. Films are presented on a state-of-the-art, 30-foot outdoor screen. All films begin at dusk.

  4. University City in Philadelphia’s #1 international dining destination. And with the return of University City Dining Days from Thursday, July 18 to Thursday, August 1 there is no excuse to not explore the 29 restaurants participating in the “3 courses, 3 prices” promotion. University City’s most popular dining destinations – including Dock Street Brewery, Jose Garces’ Distrito, and newcomers Han Dynasty, Harvest and Doc Magrogan Oyster House - are now taking reservations for the 9th annual University City Dining Days.

  5. Parklets are once again popping up all around the neighborhood thanks to University City District. This summer you can enjoy your Honest Tom’s burrito, Fu-Wah tofu hoagie, or Little Baby’s ice cream from the comfort of one of our Parklets.
