After years of planning and surveying, the City has officially begun the conversion of a mile-long stretch of S. 47th Street between Kingsessing Avenue and Chestnut Street from a two-way street to a one-way, northbound street for motor vehicles. Additionally, a new bike lane has been added for bicyclists to use traveling southbound against the flow of vehicles. Please visit the 47th and 48th Street website for full details, and read below for a summary and a list of frequently asked questions.

The changes were included in a bill introduced by Councilmember Jamie Gauthier’s office in March and passed in City Council in May of 2025. The alterations are part of a larger repaving and traffic calming project for 47th Street, which is included in Vision Zero’s High Injury Network.
