Join us the first Wednesday of the month for Spirituality on Tap, an informal gathering to discuss – not debate – questions related to spirituality, theology, religion, etc.

We value both personal experience and intellectual reason in our conversations, informed by the wisdom found in sacred scripture and tradition. While SOT is not explicitly an interfaith group, and some discussions may be specific to a Christian context, we welcome all faith and religious/non-religious backgrounds and identities. We are not at all interested in proselytizing, just learning from each other.

Drinks and food optional, and on your own.

In this “little gem of international theatre,” (Winnipeg Free Press) griots, or West African storytellers, share the tale of a water-stealing sun and an ancient baobab tree that produces an unexpected gift: a baby who is heralded to save the region from prolonged drought. Featuring traditional music from Mali and Senegal, puppets large and small, one naughty monkey and a witch with an itch to dance, Baobab is a percussion-filled fable about a young boy’s heroic quest to save his village. Making its Philadelphia debut, Théâtre Motus’ “Baobab is the next best thing to The Lion King, only smaller-scale and far better tailored (at 55 minutes) to young attention spans.” (Montreal Gazette)

Please join us for a rare screening of Goya or the Hard Way to Enlightenment (Goya – oder der arge Weg der Erkenntnis), a 1971 East German film directed by Konrad Wolf. The screening will take place at the Light Box Film Center, 401 S Broad St, Philadelphia, PA 19147.

Based on a novel by Lion Feuchtwanger, Goya or the Hard Way to Enlightenment is an East German depiction of the struggles faced by famed Spanish artist Francisco Goya as his loyalty to King and Church is tested. The artist’s personal demons emerge just as he begins to see the corruption and violence of the aristocracy and the Inquisition. Once removed from these destructive forces Goya embarks on his most critical and monumental period as an artist. (Konrad Wolf, East Germany, 1971, 132 min.) In German with English subtitles

Organized in conjunction with the Arthur Ross Gallery’s upcoming exhibition Goya: Prints from the Arthur Ross Collection. On the occasion of the Arthur Ross Gallery’s 40th anniversary, Goya: Prints from The Arthur Ross Collection references the gallery’s inaugural exhibition held in February of 1983 of a first edition of Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes’ series The Disasters of War (Los desastres de la guerra).

Join us to celebrate the launch of Shock Factory: The Visual Culture of Industrial Music, a richly researched exploration by Nicolas Ballet, art historian and associate curator in the New Media Department at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. In this study, Ballet traces how industrial artists interrogated modernity, media, and the coercive power of images, connecting the multidisciplinary creative cultures that emerged with industrial music in the 1970s and 1980s to a contemporary art discourse.

‘A deep dive into the shock tactics and artistic hybridizations employed by Early Industrial musicians and the sources they drew from. One look at the table of contents makes you realise what a huge task Ballet has taken on here. […] Throughout I have struggled to sum up such a wide ranging and immaculately researched and executed book, one that explores, inspires and questions intelligently the concepts and influences behind Early Industrial music and culture, which was both fiercely independent and determinedly underground, yet worked hand in hand with the art establishment and followed in a long tradition of radical and deliberately shocking art that challenged the taboos of the day. Ballet has managed to crack this epic topic open as I have seen few others able to do, and my difficulty in boiling that down into a review is a testament to his diligence and tenacity. For anyone interested in how true underground culture can develop and grow by building on the foundations set by other art radicals and pioneers, then this is the book for you.’ – Alan Rider, Outsideleft

Join Perry World House and the Arthur Ross Gallery for the world film premiere of the short documentary film Postigo Express about Basque photographer Fernando Postigo.

Through a drawn out and often violent campaign, Basque separatists fought for the right to self-determination in northern Spain from the 1970s through the 2000s. Basque photographer Fernando Postigo fearlessly documented the conflict in San Sebastian, daily putting himself on the front lines. Postigo’s work reveals the the human dimension of a region wrestling with questions of identity, resistance, and reconciliation.

Join Perry World House for the world premiere of Postigo Express, a short documentary exploring Postigo’s remarkable life and work. The film’s director, Peter Decherney, and its subject, Fernando Postigo, will introduce the screening and take part in a discussion afterward. Following the premiere, attendees are invited to an accompanying exhibition featuring Postigo’s powerful photographs at the Arthur Ross Gallery, opening at 5pm.

4-5 pm closing reception in the lobby of the Fisher Fine Arts Library Building5-6:30 pm panel discussion, “The Women of the Driskell Circle” in the Arthur Ross Gallery
As the David C. Driskell and Friends exhibition makes clear, over the course of his lifetime, David C. Driskell developed strong supportive relationships with many Black women artists, celebrating their art with his scholarship and advocacy, while also publicly honoring the impact of their work on his own artistic career. Driskell’s allyship as male “womanist,” a feminist framework writer Alice Walker utilized to recognize specific issues at the intersection of race and gender in the United States, was remarkable within his generation of Black male artists, many of whom seldom supported the work of women with the same enthusiasm as they did that of other men.

“The Women of the Driskell Circle” panel seeks to foreground and lift up a lifetime of friendships and artistic exchanges that Driskell had with women artists featured in the David C.Driskell and Friends exhibition, including Loïs Maillou Jones, Betye Saar, Margo Humphreys, Elizabeth Catlett, and highlight the impact of his consistent mentoring of women scholars of Black art history during his tenure at the University of Maryland.

The panel will feature art historians Adrienne Childs, Senior Consulting Curator, The Phillips Collection; Cherise Smith, Joseph D. Jamail Chair in African American Studies in the Department African & African Diaspora Studies, University of Texas, Austin; and Rebecca Vandiver, Associate Professor of African American Art, Vanderbilt University in a conversation moderated by Jordana Moore Saggese, Professor and Director of the David C. Driskell Center at the University of Maryland.

As human beings, we will all undergo a wide variety of experiences related to illness, caregiving, and our own vulnerability. Feeling deeply heard can allay some of the profound alienation, fear, loss, and loneliness that often accompanies illness, and itself contribute to the healing process. A compassionate listener can often hear both what has and has not been explicitly said, and help us understand our own life experiences in a new way. This experiential workshop, led by Aaron Levy, and Teya Sepinuck, will engage some of the powerful audio stories contributed by patients, caregivers, staff and clinicians to the Penn Medicine Listening Lab. We will also work in dyads to share our own stories and listen deeply to one another. In so doing, we will lay the groundwork for a practice of hearing what might be beyond words.

Meet Cate Osborn, aka Catieosaurus: TikTok phenomenon, ADHD advocate, and improbable star of the imaginary series Ships of the Northern Fleet. She’s cultivated nearly 2 million followers through a deceptively simple method: Ask a question. Follow it. See where it leads. If you already know her work, you know exactly what’s coming. If you’re new here, welcome. You’re going to learn something weird tonight.

Wildly Unprepared is not a magic show, but it’s not…NOT a magic show. It’s a history lecture, a comedy special, an improv experiment, and a deep dive into cultural oddities. It exists in the chaotic interstitial space between genres, which is precisely where Cate thrives. This is what happens when you give an ADHD historian with two Shakespeare degrees and expertise in neurodivergent intimacy a stage, some magic tricks, and permission to talk about whatever she wants. Which tonight might be the history of Victorian stage magic. Or medieval guilds. Or Renaissance festivals. Or why we pull rabbits from hats. Or sea shanties. The magic is real, the history is meticulously researched, and somehow it all connects. Cate weaves together forgotten women, fascinating cultural moments, and random historical footnotes, then shows how they all tell the same story about power, control, and who decides what’s “correct.”

The Event Horizon concert series features Electronic, Avant Garde, and Experimental music along with the work of live video, laser and analog projection artists. The concerts are always free and open to all.
Gordon Kurowski considers his compositions as freeform aural paintings, each tone a stroke of the brush. Frequency and color a synesthetic experience. Gordon brings his history of playing classical, rock, jazz, and free improvisation to bear on each performance to share the emotion and experience of a moment in time with listeners. Gordon uses traditional and electronic instruments both analog and digital in the construction of his sonic environments. p.s. – an Aubstraction is an aural abstract.
Laura Feathers is an experimental sound artist whose compositional process relies heavily on improvisation using synthesizers and loopers. Her improvisations can be found on SoundCloud under the name Magic Sun. Laura has performed with the Dark Circuits Bunker Orchestra, whose album Ten Minutes Late with No Bus in Sight and No Taxi Either was released on Gold Bolus Recordings in 2017. She is also featured on the recently released Dark Circus Orchestra Tribute to Phill Niblock Concert at Roulette Intermedium in Brooklyn on Philippe Petit’s label Modulisme available on Bandcamp.
Johnny Lancia realizes blissed-out ambient works and concerts under the name Huron. His music is filled with heady drones and intriguing rhythms that reflect the natural world – filtered through a variety of modular synthesizers, analog electronics and digital manipulation processes. Lancia’s synthesizers, a paradise of hidden synergies, conspire with the composer to realize a beautiful, untouchable sonic realm – as electrical currents spill out into the world with a charged dreamy glow.

Toll the Bell is a city-wide sound installation bringing greater awareness to the gun violence epidemic affecting our city and the nation. In the wake of historic surges in gun-related crime, community-based violence prevention initiatives are making a notable impact. Since 2021, Philadelphia has seen a 45% reduction in gun violence victims, yet the crisis persists, and further action is needed. Toll the Bell aims to amplify this critical balance, highlighting the vital progress made and creating space for the hope that fuels continued change. On June 5, National Gun Violence Awareness Day, a prolonged period of bell ringing and other sound-making will take place at multiple locations across the city and beyond. A collaboration with Penn’s Office of the Chaplain, Interfaith Philadelphia and many faith-based organizations and other partners, the sound installation will be paired with an interfaith vigil service and a community walk of reflection. Toll the Bell is not a profile of tragedy; it is a resounding call to action — a literal ringing of the bell — urging us to work towards transformative change for the future of our city.
