In this “little gem of international theatre,” (Winnipeg Free Press) griots, or West African storytellers, share the tale of a water-stealing sun and an ancient baobab tree that produces an unexpected gift: a baby who is heralded to save the region from prolonged drought. Featuring traditional music from Mali and Senegal, puppets large and small, one naughty monkey and a witch with an itch to dance, Baobab is a percussion-filled fable about a young boy’s heroic quest to save his village. Making its Philadelphia debut, Théâtre Motus’ “Baobab is the next best thing to The Lion King, only smaller-scale and far better tailored (at 55 minutes) to young attention spans.” (Montreal Gazette)

Join us the first Wednesday of the month for Spirituality on Tap, an informal gathering to discuss – not debate – questions related to spirituality, theology, religion, etc.

We value both personal experience and intellectual reason in our conversations, informed by the wisdom found in sacred scripture and tradition. While SOT is not explicitly an interfaith group, and some discussions may be specific to a Christian context, we welcome all faith and religious/non-religious backgrounds and identities. We are not at all interested in proselytizing, just learning from each other.

Drinks and food optional, and on your own.

Toll the Bell is a city-wide sound installation bringing greater awareness to the gun violence epidemic affecting our city and the nation. In the wake of historic surges in gun-related crime, community-based violence prevention initiatives are making a notable impact. Since 2021, Philadelphia has seen a 45% reduction in gun violence victims, yet the crisis persists, and further action is needed. Toll the Bell aims to amplify this critical balance, highlighting the vital progress made and creating space for the hope that fuels continued change. On June 5, National Gun Violence Awareness Day, a prolonged period of bell ringing and other sound-making will take place at multiple locations across the city and beyond. A collaboration with Penn’s Office of the Chaplain, Interfaith Philadelphia and many faith-based organizations and other partners, the sound installation will be paired with an interfaith vigil service and a community walk of reflection. Toll the Bell is not a profile of tragedy; it is a resounding call to action — a literal ringing of the bell — urging us to work towards transformative change for the future of our city.

In this “little gem of international theatre,” (Winnipeg Free Press) griots, or West African storytellers, share the tale of a water-stealing sun and an ancient baobab tree that produces an unexpected gift: a baby who is heralded to save the region from prolonged drought. The ensemble comes to Philadelphia for the first time with Celestial Harmony, a program of glorious music by Hildegard of Bingen, an influential musician, theologian and healer, and one of few prominent women of the time. Hailed for “creating a musical experience that was as enchanting, as it was engrossing,” (New York Classical Review) Tiburtina Ensemble explores the visionary legacy of a true Renaissance woman.

Swing Kids emerged in the mid-1990s as a fusion of obscure punk, hardcore, and region-specific social politics. Their sound was heavily influenced by the ethos of jazz and swing-era ideals distilled through a hardcore lens, resulting in a style that defied traditional genre classifications. Although their time together was brief, the band left a lasting impact.
One of Three One G’s, the DIY record label of vocalist Justin Pearson (The Locust, Some Girls, Dead Cross, Deaf Club), earliest releases was Swing Kids’ self-titled 7” EP, featuring four original tracks along with a raw take on Joy Division’s “Warsaw.” Following this, the band released a split 10” EP with bassist John Brady’s other band, Spanakorzo (he also went on to join Chicago’s Sweep The Leg Johnny and currently plays in Tijuana-based punk band Agonista).
In their final shows of that era, the band enlisted Jimmy Lavalle—known for his work with The Locust, The Crimson Curse, The Black Heart Procession, Gogogo Airheart, and The Album Leaf—to take on second guitar duties. After only a few short tours, the band disbanded when drummer Jose Palafox (Struggle, Yaphet Kotto, Bread and Circuits, Baader Brains) relocated to the Bay Area. Then came an unexpected and tragic loss: guitarist and founding member Eric Allen, also of Unbroken, took his own life. After this, the remaining members performed two benefit shows in Southern California, raising thousands for charity. Viewed by the band as funerals rather than reunions, these performances celebrated Eric’s legacy. The band also recorded a 7” single at this time as well. In 2011, Swing Kids briefly toured in Europe under the name Blue Note, joined by guitarist Nathan Joyner (Psychic Graveyard, All Leather, Hot Nerds), who remains a part of the current lineup. These would be the last shows the band would play until 2025.
This year, the band has agreed to a handful of shows, initially planned as just a one-off performance at a San Diego-based fest for John Brady’s 50th birthday. Spending time together again for the first time in over a decade proved to be special, reigniting the spirit of a band whose music, perhaps unfortunately, seems more relevant than ever.
FATBOI SHARIF
“There are plenty of rappers who fans claim “no one else is rapping like,” but this dignification is actually true of Sharif” – Rolling Stone
“There’s something in the water in New Jersey — a close-to-deadly concentration of wormwood, perhaps, or of fresh blood drained from an inexhaustible supply of sacrificia virgins. Whatever it is, Fatboi Sharif and Roper Williams are drinking from the tap” – FADER
“If a rap posse formed from today’s up-and-comers who favor dusty loops and heady verses, Sharif could be the ODB.” – Complex
“No two songs are alike, but the fragmented verses and horror flick references from each one form a twisted mosaic of Lynchian strangeness, where nothing is too strange, sacred,
or taboo.” – SPIN
“I want to create my own genre.” – Fatboi Sharif
Sharif doesn’t look at his performances with the traditional lens that a normal rapper does, bukt treats the live show as a spiritual experience where Sharif and the crowd become married through raging and serenity. With being inspired as a child by Nine Inch Nails, White Zombie, and Parliament Funkadelic it’s hard to put Fatboi in a box. Grit over glamour is the name of his game. Production wise, once he finds the right instrumental that speaks to him in his language, he’ll sit with it for a few weeks and sleep to it on repeat. he’ll dream and see certain visions, colors, and shapes that create an image on top of the production canvas. This keeps his music everlasting.
The premiere EP “Ape Twin” was the Garden State Gargoyle’s first offering to the world showcasing his storytelling and descriptive penmanship with tracks such as “Breakin Nooze,” “Cloud Atlas,” and the foreshadowing first collaboration with producer Roper Williams (AKAI SOLO, Pink Siifu, YOUR OLD DROOG) on the deceased mermaid’s love letter “Egyptian Mermaid Lust.” After this collaboration and forming a friendship connecting through the shared interest in music, movies, and mutual hate of mediocrity, Fatboi Sharif & Roper William’s GANDHI LOVES CHILDREN was brought into the world. On Gandhi Loves Children, Roper created a different world for each song leaving room for Sharif to expand on his audio spiral soup of thought.
Coming off his breakthrough album, leaving an impression on many new listeners, Fatboi followed up with a 6 track EP Cyber City Society. Produced entirely by phenomenal stream-of-consciousness dart thrower “Lungs/Lonesword” of the Tase Grip collective. Lonesword’s production is its own sub-genre of underground music that became the perfect soundscape for Sharif’s imagination to run rampant on.
2022 brought us Fatboi Sharif & noface’s cult classic, Preaching in Havana, courtesy of boutique label Purple Tape Pedigree. An album about fear, and life, and death, and soul searching– finding God in babylon.
Fatboi Sharif teams back up with producer Roper Williams for their 2023 EP, Planet Unfaithful. His remarkable flow, something between a possession and a bad trip, matches well with the swirling samples. Bruiser Wolf and Elucid lend a hand as collaborators on this project as well. Later that year Sharif collaborated with Steel Tipped Dove for the Decay LP, released on Backwoodz Studioz. “An anomaly. In an era of microwave projects and email collaborations, the duo spent more than a year writing, recording and mixing Decay together in Dove’s Brooklyn studio. At a moment when many independent hip-hop projects are sonically predictable, easily categorized, and derivative, Decay is unapologetically experimental,” says the Backwoodz label website. To cap off the year, Sharif scratched off a bucket list accomplishment by bringing one of his idols, Bigg Jus, back outside to collaborate on the two-man mission EP that is, 2023’s Insomniac Missile Launcher. Fully produced by Bigg Jus, who also rapped some of his best verses on each track.
Accomplishing one of his life goals didn’t stop Fatboi from coming right back at the top of 2024 with Roper Williams to deliver one of his best and most unique projects to date. Billed as an album but dressed as a single on the DSPs, Fatboi & Roper’s “Something About Shirley” in a concise, dense roller coaster soundscape with a 10-minute run time. Later in the year Sharif joined teams with multi talented Duncecap for their exciting EP – Psychedelics Wrote the Bible. This trip only lasts for about 11 minutes, but like any intense psychedelic experience, your sense of time will get totally warped by it anyway. Lyrically he’s inspired to paint pictures like Stephen King, Oliver Stone, Stanley Kubrick, Clive Barker, David Lynch, and Ernest Dickerson. A literature titan and comic villain-like figure, Fatboi is one of the most charismatic and embracing individuals you’ll have the pleasure of meeting.
VENUS TWINS
Twin telepathy is real: “Being twins is definitely an unusual life experience; it seems the only way Venus Twins works is that the only two people in the band have this specific connection to one another.” Venus Twins was founded in Denton, TX in the summer of 2018 by Jake (drums) and Matt Derting (bass and vocals). They began writing/recording their first release, Kickass, immediately after inception, followed by a relocation to Brooklyn. Venus Twins’ first LP, Eat Your Dogs, accompanied this relocation. The next release was RAXIS, paired with nearly non-stop touring for two years averaging a show every 3.4 days, playing with bands such as Whores., Heavenly Blue, and Pons. Of upcoming release Stitching (visualized as ////), vocalist/bassist Matt explains: “I love sewing and making clothes. Throughout the recording of this EP I was practicing a lot, and it started to feel like a perfect metaphor lyrically.” The band is influenced by bands such as Hella, Gilla Band, Machine Girl, JOHNNASCUS, PageNinetyNine, Melt Banana, The Locust, The Mars Volta, and Anthony Green, as well as non-musical artists like Kurt Vonnegut, Andy Kaufman, Robert Eggers, the feeling of constantly being stressed out, and living in NYC.
Stitching was recorded, produced and mixed by Hayden Ticehurst at Studio G in Brooklyn, as well as his personal studio. Mastered by Dan Millice (Hella, A$ap Rocky).
SOJI
Hardcore punk four piece SOJI produces energetic melodies paired alongside subversive lyrics reflecting on racism, womanism, police brutality, and the growing housing crisis. Aptly named “the crown revived”, SOJI comes out the gate swinging with a radically Black, Trans and Queer-led ethos and a dedication to disrupting existing punk spaces in favor of centering more Black Queer and Trans punks.

George Harrison’s music and spirituality has touched millions. In the creative shadow of Lennon and McCartney, his songwriting evolved from his early Beatle compositions (“Think For Yourself”) to timeless standards (“Something” and “Here Comes The Sun”). His experimentation with Eastern music and philosophy changed the course of popular music (“Love You To” and “Within You Without You”). “Savoy Truffle” perform an electric and acoustic tribute to George Harrison – from the Beatle years to his Top 10 hits of the 1970’s (“My Sweet Lord” and “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth”) through his return to the spotlight with the Travelling Wilburys (“Handle With Care”) and beyond.

Paul Taylor Dance Company is “one of the most exciting, innovative, and delightful dance companies in the entire world.” (The New York Times) This audience-favorite returns with Speaking in Tongues, a dramatic work which had its world premiere on our stage in 1988. Set against a melodic yet haunting score, the piece examines the undercurrent of fanaticism and hypocrisy in religion. A stark contrast, the program will also feature the definitive Taylor work Esplanade, “a classic of American dance” (The New Yorker) that is at once playful, somber and romantic. Set to Bach, this masterwork celebrates its 50th anniversary with “stunning athleticism and irrepressible lyricism.” (CBS News)

Patchwork Storytelling Guild Presents: Light in the Dark — A World Storytelling Day Celebration of Story, Community, and Creative Renewal
Patchwork Storytelling Guild invites the public to celebrate World Storytelling Day with a special event titled Light in the Dark, a joyful afternoon of storytelling, creativity, and connection. This community gathering will feature an interactive storytelling workshop, a shared lunch experience, and a dynamic showcase of live storytelling performances.
This year’s theme, Light in the Dark, is an invitation to pause and remember what stories have always done for humanity: illuminate, heal, challenge, comfort, and connect. Whether humorous, poignant, or mythic, storytelling offers us a way to find meaning and beauty even in uncertain times.
Featured storytellers include: Michele Belluomini, Carin Bonifacino, Tesia Nicoli Campbell, JR Denson, Paul Heery, Karen Reiner, Tannia Schrieber, Barbara Sherf, Christina Sturgis, Christopher Wade, and Denise McCormack.
Denise McCormack, Patchwork’s president and torch-bearer, will host the event and shares:
“Stories are the lampposts given to us by our predecessors in life. They encourage us, mark the way, and smooth the road—often revealing bypasses and shortcuts—so that we might stride toward our destinations with confidence and clarity. And it is our stories that will one day light the way for others. This showcase is a testament to that power, and to that generosity of spirit.”
Patchwork’s event welcomes both longtime lovers of storytelling and those discovering it for the first time. Whether you attend to learn, to listen, or simply to share in the warmth of community, this celebration promises an afternoon of inspiration and connection through story.
BE PART OF OUR STORY
Patchwork Storytelling Guild believes that storytelling is more than entertainment—it is cultural preservation, emotional truth-telling, and a bridge between people.

David Tudor’s musical partnership with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company spanned nearly five decades, from the company’s founding in 1953 until Tudor’s death in 1996. As a founding member, Tudor served not only as a virtuoso performer of revolutionary piano works but also as an essential collaborator in shaping the company’s sonic identity. Working alongside John Cage, Gordon Mumma, Christian Wolff, and Takehisa Kosugi, Tudor helped pioneer a radical approach to the relationship between sound and movement—one in which music and dance coexisted independently yet in the same time and space. This screening, the second of two film programs dedicated to Tudor’s work with the Cunningham company, presents “Cunningham Ballett” (1958) and “Channels/Inserts” (1982).

PROGRAM:
Cunningham Ballett (1958) | 24 min, black & white, sound, digital transfer
Performance for Camera: Brussels, Belgium, 1958. This film for television includes “Changeling” (1957), “Suite for Two” (1956), and “Springweather and People” (1955). Dancers: Carolyn Brown and Merce Cunningham. Musicians: John Cage and David Tudor.
Channels/Inserts (1982) | 31:40 min, color, sound, 16 mm film on HD video
Choreography: Merce Cunningham. Direction/Editing: Charles Atlas. Music: David Tudor, “Phonemes”

ABOUT THE FILMS
To create Channels/Inserts, Cunningham and Atlas divided the Cunningham Dance Company’s Westbeth studio into sixteen possible areas for dancing and used chance methods based on the I Ching to determine the order in which these spaces would be used, the number of dancers to be seen, and the events that would occur in each space. Atlas employed cross-cutting and animated mattes or wipes to indicate a simultaneity of dance events occurring in different spaces, as well as to allow for diversity in the continuity of the image. The sound score is a recording of David Tudor’s PHONEMES.
Dancers are dressed in everyday clothing and at times stop dancing to congregate casually. This cessation, of course, is legible neither as dance nor “not-dance,” but is in-between and liminal, pointing to Cunningham’s persistent interest in “pedestrian” movement. Movement, the choreographer seems to indicate, exists in a continual tension—the everyday appears in the dance phrase and the dance phrase appears in the everyday, or bear each other’s traces. The dancing body is always-already an everyday body and in turn, the everyday body always-already contains the potential for movement read as dance.

Our 25/26 season, America Unfinished, aims to explore and illuminate the ongoing struggle to fulfill the promises made by our nation’s founders 250 years ago. How do the foundational ideals of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness resonate in the America of today, and what do they reveal about our evolving democracy? Is being ‘unfinished’ a failure, or an opportunity? What is your role in completing or redirecting the American experiment? What will the next 250 years look like? Philosopher John Dewey believed that good conversations underpin our democracy, so we encourage you to join the discussion at The Listening Cabinet in our Feintuch Family Lobby. Before your next show, select a question from a drawer and contemplate on your own or strike up a conversation with your neighbor. The questions were submitted by Philadelphians like you and encourage us all to reflect on this moment in our country’s legacy.
