The 40th Street Trolley Portal is scheduled to start construction in 2016 and officially open in 2017, University City District (UCD) directorMatthew Bergheiser announced Wednesday at the the State of University City launch. Initially the project was slated to begin construction this year. Bergheiser said they can now move forward to the construction phase now that they have $2.1 million in funding, which includes $1.7 million raised and $400,000 commitment of district funds by the UCD board.

Plans for the 40th Street Trolley Portal, which sits between Baltimore and Woodland avenues, aim to transform the currently concrete-heavy, bland space into a social hub that will include seating, art installations, and a restaurant cafe with a green roof. Bergheiser says they are still finalizing the restaurant tenant.
