CURBED • Market Street Bridge gets pop of color in new mural installation

An array of bright colors has been added to the Market Street Bridge as part of an ongoing effort to beautify the space.

The project, which the University City District is calling a “refreshment” of the bridge, sees planters along the pedestrian walkway on the bridge painted purple, green and blue. It’s the result of a collaboration between UCD and Glossblack, a Philly-based graffiti artist.

“His concept for the bridge was to create what he called “pixelated patterns” using shades of green, blue, indigo, and violet,” the UCD wrote in a statement, adding that the colors are based off the swings at The Porch, a park next to 30th Street Station. It’s fitting, as the new installation is meant to incorporate the bridge in with the public space outside the station.

“We wanted to create a more fun and whimsical look to the bridge and tie it in more closely with the style of the Porch at 30th Street Station,” said Nate Hommel, director of planning and design for UCD.

The installation follow’s the bridge’s first beautification project nearly 3 years ago, when UCD lined the bridge with planters, trees, and benches.
