Trees & Greening

UCD is raising money to maintain green space throughout the District. Plus each dollar raised for greening in University City will be matched up to $25,000. If you love and use green space in University City, now is the time to double your impact on the neighborhood we love.

Join the Master Gardeners for a day of activity to include a Plant Sale of vegetables, annuals, perennials, and houseplants, Ask the Master Gardener Table, Tours of the Demonstration Gardens, Children and Adult Activity Stations, Orchard planting and sheet mulching day with POP, and more. Rain or Shine.

Last week our crews added over 800 hyacinth, iris, muscari, and tulip "forced bulbs" along with 20 new Japanese pieris flowering shrubs and a fresh coat of licorice root mulch.

Thanks to the 184 households who participated in our treecycling day on Saturday. Electronic Recycling Day has been moved to this Saturday, January 11 in Clark Park from 10am-2pm.

Help us keep University City clean and green! Join your friends and neighbors for final community cleanup of 2013 in University City: Saturday, December 7

Our neighborhood is lucky to have a beautiful tree canopy, but that doesn't mean that there aren't still gaps on blocks that would benefit from additional trees. UC Green is looking for volunteers to help identify locations where additional trees are needed. The deadline for getting these locations identified and added to UC Green's spring tree planting is December 1st, 2013, so we only have a few weeks to act!  For more information and to participate, contact UC Green at 215 573-4684.

UCD recently updated the plant collection at The Porch with winter-tolerant annuals, perennials, and shrubs. Here's a look at our new plant identification board which is also on display for your reference at The Porch.

The Porch at 30th Street Station can be a harsh urban environment for plants, often subjected to extremes in temperature and wind. Over a short period of time, UCD has experimented and found the ideal collection of plants that positively respond to (and even love!) these conditions. And, if they grow at The Porch, we’re sure they can grow in your garden too. Have you taken a seat at The Porch recently and noticed a plant you haven’t seen before? Then wondered what it was called? These questions come up often, so UCD decided to add plant identification signage at The Porch.
