Details on 2022 40th Street Trolley Track Renewal Project

SEPTA is continuing their excavation and renewal work to trolley tracks on 40th Street and the curve at 42nd and Spruce that will impact travel and parking throughout the summer. At the project's end, trolley riders and vehicles traveling along 40th Street will enjoy smoother streets, refreshed line painting, and improved track components.

UCD Data Digest: Construction Permits on the Rise

After a pause in the first months of the pandemic, construction in University City has rebounded and then some. During the first quarter of 2020, there were just two permits issued in University City, down from five a year earlier. This trend played out across the city, with WHYY reporting that only four new construction permits were issued across the entire city in April 2020, down from 122 in 2019.

Street Sweeping Pilot Coming to Sections of West Philadelphia

Philadelphia's street-sweeping pilot program is set to expand to certain neighborhoods in Philadelphia, including some areas of our community. Beginning April 4th, 14 pilot areas will begin seeing regular street-sweepers cleaning their neighborhoods, and six of these areas will begin receiving fines of $31 for cars that do not move during posted sweeping times beginning in May.

University City, Rising Together: Support us Today

As we close out 2021, we at University City District are reflecting on the many challenges this neighborhood has persevered through since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Public spaces became essential outlets to ease the stress of cabin fever. Our favorite restaurants and retailers shuttered early on and then found creative ways to stay afloat until foot traffic returned to the streets. Anchor institutions hired locally as they built out the infrastructure to combat the pandemic.

UCD Data Digest: Digging Into Population Numbers from the 2020 Census

According to results from the 2020 census, the city of Philadelphia hit its highest population level since the 1980s. After a modest gain of just .6% in 2010, and 10s of thousands of losses each decade back until 1960, Philadelphia’s population grew by nearly 5% between 2010 and 2020, gaining approximately 75,000 individuals. For the first time since the 1980s, over 1.6 million people reside in the city, and a growing number of them call University City home.
